Halaal Food Sale Inside Masjid

I hope this message finds you in the best of health and imaan.
I have a question regarding the Islamic ruling on selling home-cooked food at the masjid on Fridays. I live in Canada, where access to ready-made halal food is quite minimal in my city I live, so providing this food would be a helpful service for the local community.
My plan is to cook the food by myself and sell it for personal income after the Jummah prayer is completely finished. I also intend to give a portion of my profits directly to the masjid as a donation.
Because I am a sister and want to strictly avoid free-mixing with men, my plan is to stay inside the women's section to conduct my sales to the sisters. At the same time, a brother will be selling food separately in the men's section.Please note that due to the severe Canadian winter weather and snow, setting up tables outdoors is not physically possible for several months of the year, which is why we need to operate indoors.
I know that commercial business is generally forbidden inside the masjid, but I would like to know if our situation is permissible given that:
- The transactions take place only after the Jummah prayer is entirely over.
- A portion of the profits goes directly to benefit the masjid.
- I am staying inside the women's area solely to maintain modesty and avoid mixing.
- Severe winter weather prevents us from using the outdoor courtyard or parking lot.
If trading is strictly forbidden inside the actual women's and men's prayer halls despite these circumstances, what alternative indoor layout, method, or digital pre-order system would you advise so that we can still provide halal food and donate to the masjid while protecting our modesty?

First, we ask Allah, the Most Merciful, to keep you steadfast in His religion, increase you in goodness and bless your efforts to serve the Muslim community.
Regarding your question, commercial transactions should ordinarily not be conducted inside the mosque, particularly within the musallaa—the area specifically designated for prayer. You have, however, described circumstances in Canada that create genuine difficulty:
• The availability of ready-made halal food in your city is very limited.
• Providing such food would be a beneficial service to the local Muslim community.
• Because of the severe Canadian winter, snow and freezing conditions, setting up tables outside the mosque is not reasonably practicable for several months of the year.
Islamic law contains established principles that provide ease when genuine hardship arises. Among them are:
Al-mashaqqatu tajlib al-tayseer
“Hardship brings about facilitation.”
Allah says:
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.”
(Qur’an 2:286)
He also says:
“So be mindful of Allah to the best of your ability.”
(Qur’an 64:16)
The Prophet ﷺ similarly instructed:
“Make things easy and do not make things difficult.”
These principles do not mean that Islamic rulings may be changed according to personal preference or convenience. Rather, the Shariʿah itself provides carefully regulated concessions when there is a genuine need or hardship and no reasonable alternative is available. Such concessions must remain limited to what the circumstances actually require.
This is expressed in the legal maxim:
Al-ḍaruratu tuqaddaru bi-qadariha
“Necessity is restricted to the extent required by that necessity.”
Therefore, we suggest first referring the matter to the mosque administration and requesting the allocation of a suitable place outside the musallaa. This might include an entrance area, corridor, library, waiting room or another adjoining facility that is not formally designated as part of the prayer area.
The administration should confirm whether the proposed location is legally considered part of the mosque or merely an ancillary facility.
Other practical alternatives should also be considered, such as:
• Accepting orders and payments online or by telephone;
• Providing door-to-door delivery;
• Preparing orders in advance and establishing a designated collection point;
• Allowing customers to collect prepaid orders briefly from an approved area near the mosque entrance.

If no reasonable alternative is genuinely available, the matter may be presented to a qualified local scholar together with the mosque administration.
