INTRODUCTION

This question concerns the validity of the fast when a woman undergoes gynecological ultrasound examination during Fasting. The answer depends on whether the examination involves insertion into the vaginal canal or is merely external.

QURANIC EVIDENCE

لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.”
Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286

SCHOLARLY EXPLANATION

The scholars agree that only that which enters the body through the mouth, nose, or in a way comparable to drinking breaks the fast. A gynecological ultrasound examination using an external transducer does not invalidate the fast. However, if a vaginal probe is inserted, there is scholarly disagreement. The most correct view is that an internal vaginal ultrasound does not break the fast because nothing enters the body through normal food and drink passages.
Furthrrmore, Medical examinations are considered necessity and fall under the principle of necessity overriding prohibitions.

CONCLUSION

A woman may undergo both external and internal gynecological ultrasound examinations during fasting without breaking her fast, as these are medical necessities and also because it involves no ingestion of substances.
